Dahab has a wide range of social events. This article describes four venues where you can meet friendly people on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday night.
Blabla Language Exchange – Saturday
BlaBla Language Exchange is an international movement aimed at meeting new people. Blabla meet at 8 pm on Saturday nights at various venues which are posted on Facebook. Its primary goal is to bring together expatriate communities, travellers, and locals. In Dahab, it is a great opportunity for local Egyptians, Bedouin, tourists and expatriates to meet each other.
The environment is friendly, relaxed, and informal. One time we sat on cushions, Egyptian style. The only requirement was that we told a bit about ourselves, and bought something from the restaurant. Conversation flows from there.
Blabla’s website is https://www.blablalanguageexchange.com/
The Miracle Village is a regular venue for social events including Blabla. https://www.facebook.com/MirageVillageDahab?mibextid=ZbWKwL
If you feel a bit alone, or open for spontaneity, are an introvert, or are brimming with energy and want to give and receive, this is a good group to try.
Open Mic – Tuesday
Tuesday evening is for open microphone on the rooftop of Tota Restaurant in El Fanar Street. You do not need to register. Simply drop in whenever it suits you. Tell the host/organiser that you have something to perform, and boom, the floor is yours!
Musicians, singers, poets, rappers, actors, magicians, whatever, pro, amateur, are most welcome. Even if you feel you are not that talented, have a go anyway! People will love to see and hear you.
If you don’t have something to share, you are almost certain to become entertained on a high level during an evening at Tota.
Quiz Night – Wednesday
Each Wednesday, local British expats arrange a quiz night. It starts around 8 pm at the Coral Coast Hotel Resto, by the sea between Lighthouse and Eel Garden.
Participants form teams, and the quiz master fires off questions from categories like sports, arts, literature, music, science, etc. The questions are of different difficulties. Some are quite challenging, but that adds to the fun for the competitively minded.
During the quiz food and drink, including beer, can be purchased. The restaurant sponsors vouchers for the winning team which you can use to buy a drink afterwards.
Highly recommended.
Karaoke – Friday
Each Friday at 8 pm there is karaoke night. It is held in the Furry Cup bar at the Blue Beach Club Hotel. This can be found in the Lighthouse area and can be entered from the beach side.
The standard is not very high, so everyone can join in and have a great time! Join up, with a thought about which tune you’d like to sing to. It’s very unpretentious, just a laptop and a microphone. Tell the host what you’d like to sing, and he finds the song on YouTube. Sing to your heart’s content, and you will surely get good applause and have a fun evening.
